Maria Counts

MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR

Maria Debije Counts is involved in all aspects of the strategy and vision of Counts Studio, where she is managing principal. She has lead projects in project management, collaborative design, technology, design communication, and business development. Ms. Counts brings a wealth of passion, talent, and enthusiasm to all projects fueled by a commitment to excellence in landscape design and construction. She specializes in urban landscapes and public projects that challenge the every-day landscape. Her design aspirations are to create landscapes of complexity grounded in experiential richness, ecological health, and emotional resonance. Maria also specializes in design representation, visualization and communication. Ms. Counts is a published author and in addition to practice, she lectures and teaches design studios and other courses related to representation and implementation.

 

Maria was the project manager for the 2013 National ASLA Award-Winning Park Project 'Moore Square' located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, Expo Georgia, involving a design for a 40-acre post-Soviet Expo Grounds, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, the competition-awarded Happy Valley Garden, Whuhan, China, and the competition-awarded 2013  Beijing International Garden Expo, Beijing, China. Ms. Counts' project experience also includes Qianshan New City,  a 55-acre on-structure mixed-use landscape design for 15,000 residents in Qianshan New City, Zhuhai, 337 Garden, a 200-year-old garden in New York, New York, and the United Nations Memorial for the North Atlantic Slave Trade with Artist Joseph Norman. Ms. Counts' professional experience also includes working with Reed Hilderbrand where she contributed to representation for three winning national ASLA awards in 2011. In 2008 Maria was honored to hold a garden exhibition at the at the Jardins de Métis in Québec, Canada as part of the International Garden Design Festival. In recognition of her work, she was an invited panelist for New York AIA symposium for the Film ‘Twice Upon a Garden’, a FIFA awarded internationally traveling documentary.

 

In addition to practice, Ms. Counts is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Spitzer School of Arthiceture in New York City where she teaches design studios, visual representation, and planting design. She has been an invited design critic at leading universities and recently contributed two chapters and student work to a forthcoming publication edited by Nadia Amoroso, Representing Landscapes: Digital, and  Representing Landscapes: Hybrid (forthcoming 2016). Ms. Counts received a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University.
